CLASSES & WORKSHOPS
The Dance Division of the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation currently offers classes in ballet, pointe, Afro-Brazilian/Afro Fusion/West African, creative movement, contemporary, Gyrokinesis®, international folk dance, Pilates, Dance Fit, tai chi, tap and theater jazz. Offered at minimal cost to participants, classes are taught for children, teens, adults, and senior citizens. TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS are available through Friends of Metro Dance.
COVID Protocols (as of 7/15/22): Masks are currently optional but encouraged when distancing cannot be observed, in areas with poor ventilation, and around high-risk individuals.

CLASS FOR CHILDREN & TEENS
Registration for Fall 2022 Classes Opens July 18. Classes begin August 15.
CLASSICAL BALLET
(Ages 6+) Students experience the beauty and discipline of classical ballet in a cohesive program of study that gives students a solid technical foundation, develops their artistry, and prepares them for performance in a professional setting. New students beyond the beginning level should e-mail the Dance Division Supervisor for placement before registering.

EARLY CHILDHOOD
(Ages 18 months-5 yrs) Our early childhood classes introduce young children to the joy of dance with a blend of movement, music, rhythm, and creative imagery to help them develop a musical ear, locomotor skills and physical coordination in a developmentally appropriate way, all while having fun!

CONTEMPORARY
(Ages 6+) Contemporary dance training building strong, creative dancers through technique, improvisation, and composition. Students learn technique, create original movement, and move with confidence through creative and imaginative movement exercises.

TAP & THEATER JAZZ
(Ages 4+) Calling all Broadway babies! Dancers who love the spotlight will love our classes that introduce them to the fundamentals of theater jazz and tap dance and refine their skills in coordination, rhythm, and stage presence.

AFRO-BRAZILIAN
Instructor: Jasmine Dominique , Join Jasmine Dominique for a class full of soulful and dynamic movement that will lift your spirits and nurture your body while you develop rhythm and coordination, relieve stress, and increase fitness.

WEST AFRICAN
Instructor: Windship Boyd Join Windship Boyd to explore together different dances from West Africa (primarily Guinean dances) with a focus on the fundamentals, feeling the music, and the joy of movement. Windship has been studying dance in West Africa for over 15 years and recently returned from an extended stay. All levels welcome.

BALLET
Instructor: Rebekah Barger (Tue/Thu); Katie Eliason (Fri) Dance in a welcoming environment with inspiring live piano accompaniment! Students should have some experience in ballet and the ability to modify movements as needed to suit their level of experience.

DANCEFIT
Instructor: Kat Mathis DanceFit is a medium-to-high intensity, dance-based cardio fitness class that's FUN. Experience a challenging workout in a positive and encouraging environment with easy-to-follow choreography and a pop music playlist.

DANCING WITH PARKINSON'S
Instructor: Julia Marx, MA, R-DMT This class engages the body, mind, and spirit in dance and movement designed to address the challenges of living with PD. With no prior dance experience required, you will learn to move to music in ways which are fun and easy to pick up. Dances provide practice with balance, flexibility, mobility, coordination, creative thought, and relaxation. All activities can be done standing or seated. Individuals with Parkinson’s and their partners and caregivers are welcome. Class is free for all participants.

GYROKINESIS®
Instructor: Phylicia Roybal The Gyrokinesis Method is a movement method that addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences.

PILATES
Instructor: Kari Gregg The exercises created by Joseph H. Pilates use muscle control, breathing techniques, imagery and postural alignment to strengthen the entire body. Kari uses a variety of props to challenge your strength, flexibility, mobility, and balance in each class, helping you build confidence to move through all of the daily activities you love with ease and joy.

TAI CHI
Instructor: Jen-Jen Lin Tai Chi moves slowly and gently with a calm mind, sometimes called meditation in motion. It applies the theory of yin and yang and strives the balance the body and mind. Learn basic breathing, stances, walking and beginning level Tai Chi low-impact exercise.
