“Holding” by Amanda Howard. This solo work, inspired by Maira Kalman’s book Women Holding Things, examines the challenges women experience from societal expectations, such as managing emotions, daily tasks, and maintaining personal interests while preserving a sense of self. Through symbolic objects like an oversized grocery bag and a lampshade, the piece explores women carrying silent burdens. Amanda Howard’s solo performance highlights the isolation that often accompanies this struggle. The 1950s-inspired costume and stage props reinforce themes of domesticity, societal pressures, and the potential regression of women into traditional roles.
